Popular Home Architectural Styles
Just about everyone dreams about the day they will be able to afford their dream home. But everyone’s dream home is different. For some a dream home is just like the home they grew up in, for others it’s a house they saw in a movie or read about in a book, for some it may be a house built in a certain architectural style, and for still others their dream home is a completely custom home built to fit the needs of the family. When it comes time to build that dream home, there are a few design styles that have been popular for years. Listed below are some of the most popular design styles still built by home builders today.
Bungalow Style
Initially popular from 1910 to 1930, this cozy home design has made a comeback in recent years. Bungalows are generally narrower but deeper homes with either no garage or a detached garage. Most bungalows were built as starter homes on smaller lots about a quarter of an acre. Bungalows are often only one or two stories. Common features include a low-pitched roof that hangs over a front porch. Gables or a hipped roof is also typical.
Colonial Style
Colonial style homes are distinguished by their rectangular design, typically symmetrical. Colonials have tall two-story designs with rooms on the second floor. Windows are usually double-hung with small panes of equal size, framed by shutters. The entryway is usually protruding and often supported by columns.
Cape Cod Style
Cape Cod style homes originated in New England and are characterized by low, broad frame and a steep overhanging roof. Shutters and wide clapboards on the exterior give cape cod style homes their distinctive look.
Defining Your Style In Your Home Design Idea
Leonardo Da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. And when it comes to interior design this can often by the best route to take if you don’t trust your own design instincts. There is a danger however, that your house will blend into every other carbon copy home that we see cloned on every street today. Why do we practice such safe design? Is it because we suffer from a lack of imagination, or are home owners up and down the land just not brave enough to experiment? Maybe in this difficult economic climate we cannot risk straying from that safe color palette of cream and white?
You can look for inspiration everywhere and don’t fear your own style. There are several ways in which you can experiment without breaking the bank and below are a few ideas and tips, which could inspire you to create your own unique groove. Firstly, do a little research. Websites such as housetohome have a fantastic gallery of pictures and suppliers that can inspire you and are less likely to be found in the house next door.
Create a mood board. Collect images, color swabs and fabric samples in order to focus your ideas and inspire you. This way you will be able to see which colors and styles go together and it will also help you commit to only buying what you need. Steer clear of the plain and create simple elegance by choosing a simple color palette but also experimenting with different textures of paint and fabrics.
Add a splash of color by adding cushions and throws or curtains. Cushions, and more surprisingly curtains, are easy to make if you have a bit of time on your hands and you can get quality designer fabrics at greatly reduced prices online. Therea are lots of stores that sell designer fabrics at cheap prices. If you don’t fancy making curtains yourself, look for stores can get these made up for you.
Accessories with one or two unique pieces such as a beautiful free standing mirror or a piece of artwork. Accent points are one home decorating idea that can get a lot of attention. By creating pieces which contrast sharply with the colors and pattern in the rest of the room, you can draw the eye naturally to these features, controlling the visual interest of the room. This allows you to feature not just a piece, but an entire corner, wall, or section of a room. This also allows you to draw the eye away from other places in the home.
Light can be a very powerful force in your decorating arsenal, giving you the ability to create a sense of atmosphere within a room. Bright lights tend to make a space feel more energetic and open, while a dim lighting scheme will create a sense of intimacy and closeness that will draw people together.
One great home decorating idea is to use a common theme throughout the room. This can be a certain style that is evoked in each space, or even just a single consistent object, such as a piece of art, or a decorative wall hanging, that becomes the cornerstone of the style that you create throughout the entire home.
Another way to get home decorating ideas is to flip through magazines and watch television shows that will show you how to implement interesting ideas throughout your home. These ideas can be copied by you directly, or you can use them as a starting point, a springboard into your own unique ideas to be implemented throughout a space.
