Living Room Decorating Tips
Decorating your living room is the perfect place to start to set the mood for the rest of your home. Here are some tips to get your living room looking its best.First of all, pick your budget. Decorating can run up a hefty bill if you are not careful. Decide how much you want to spend and stick with it.
Is your living room small or big? The room size will help dictate what colors to paint with and to use as highlights. Smaller rooms need lighter, brighter colors to help make the space look larger. On the other hand, dark colors suit a large room as it does not cramp the space.
Room size is also important in what decorations you choose. The more you have in a room, the smaller it will look. An already narrow room will look painfully cramped if you choose to put several pieces of furniture and a number of paintings or decorations on the walls. With a small room, wisely pick a couple versatile chairs and a loveseat; or any other important piece of furniture-before you choose the remaining decor.
Do not line all your furniture up against walls. This will create a stale, square look. Instead, pull the chairs and couch away from the walls and set lamps, flowers, or tall and narrow statuettes behind the furniture. This adds an extra dimension to your living room.
Deciding how you will use your living room will help you choose what furniture and decor would be best. Do you need a lot of open space for room to play Nintendo Wii? Will it be a lounge room to read, watch TV, play board games, or do yoga? Will you be hosting large groups of people? A TV room could have a large flat-screen mounted on the wall in front of an open space. A lounge room will have plenty of cushioned chairs or bean bags with a table perfect for setting up games or holding snacks and drinks.
Play with textures. Do not be afraid to use stripes and polka dots in the same room. Texture the walls before you paint them. Use brightly colored and variegated pillows or throw rugs to add definition to the room.
Use mirrors to make a room bigger. Set them above the mantel or in an empty spot above a larger piece of furniture.
Lighting is one of the biggest assets to your living room. Set lights behind furniture or on end tables. Use three way bulbs or mood lights to create various levels of lighting. Lamps come in hundreds of different sizes, shapes, and colors. Not only are they practical, but they can add a real art to your room.
