Venus Fly Trap
How To Keep A Venus Fly Trap In Your Home
The Venus Fly Trap (Dianaea muscipula) is one of the most popular and intriguing plants that can be grown in your home. It’s known as a carnivorous plant, or meat-eating plant. Its “flowers” attract the flies to them, and then when a fly lands on the inside, hairs are brushed and triggers off a reaction. The flower then shuts, and enzymes and other digestive juices are squirted in to digest the fly alive. The Venus Fly Trap has always been popular because of its human-like actions. If you every buy a Fly Trap, use a long leaf to tickle the hairs inside. The flower then spookily closes up. Although it is safe to do this a couple of times, doing it too often can destroy the flowers and waste the plant’s energy stores. The flowers can take up to four days to reopen, so by closing all of them, you inhibit the plant from catching any food.
To keep a Dianaea muscipula, you should ensure that the bottom 5 mm of the pot is in water, to keep the roots damp, as the plant is used to living in swamp-like moist conditions. It is not necessary to add extra nutrients to the soil as flies contain all the nutrients the Venus Fly Trap needs.
If you live in a house where you don’t find many flies, you could catch some flies or other insects yourself and feed them to your Venus Fly Trap, whatever you decide, the choice is yours!
Tips to Keep Your Venus Fly Trap Thriving
Venus Fly Traps are some of the most unusual living things in all of creation, being one of a tiny number of plants that are carnivorous. It’s this quirk that makes the Venus Fly Trap such a popular household plant. Of course, it also means that you can’t treat one like other plants. Here are the basics on how to take care of a these carnivorous plants.First, the good news is that, exotic as these plants are, taking care of them isn’t really all that difficult. Of course, they will need water. But there is no need to water them from the top like most plants. Instead, you will want to make sure that their roots are in water, which you can do by putting a bowl of water under them. This should be either distilled or rainwater you have collected specifically for this purpose. Do not use tap water, as the salt and chlorine in it can damage or kill a Venus Fly Trap.
From time to time, you will need to prune your Venus Fly Trap. Each plant actually has several traps, and they wither and die just like leaves or blooms on any plant. When you see a trap that has died, just snip it off. If the stem is still healthy, you can snip it at the top (though the trap won’t grow back). Otherwise, just go ahead and cut the entire stem and trap off.
Feeding your Venus Fly Trap isn’t hard. In fact, if you keep your fly traps outside, you won’t need to feed them at all as they can fend quite well for themselves off unlucky passing insects. If you keep them inside, just make sure they get an insect every now and then. Good options include insects such as a fly, grasshopper, ant, etc. The bug should be live, or just recently stunned. They can live off of one insect for up to 10 days or so, and their trap will remain shut for that whole time. Don’t feed them worms, as most worms have too much calcium, which can harm the Venus Fly Trap. And never, ever, give them any kind of meat, either raw or cooked. They were not designed to eat meat, and it can kill them. Those are the nuts and bolts of how to take care of a Venus Fly Trap. Follow these directions and you should be able to get years of enjoyment growing carnivorous plants.
