At Colonial Van Lines, we’re not exactly gurus of decluttering, but we are a moving company, and we do know that organization can be very advantageous during the process of relocation. So, this is what we like to call “Decluttering Lite: Tips for Maintaining Order Before, During, and After Your Long-Distance Move.”
Home Organization Hacks
Time to take a mom’s eye view of your living space. Here are some home organization hacks that would earn her stamp of approval.
Sort by Category
Ever wish you had a clothes locator app? There may be no GPS for finding your black yoga pants but storing like things together may help you find them more easily. Try stacking your jeans in one corner and your teacups in another. It will give you a chance to see how much of something you have and how much you can afford to get rid of.
One in One Out Rule
If you just can’t leave it in the store, but you just can’t fit it in your closet, the one in one out rule is the one to live by. For every item that you bring into your home, donate one to charity. It will prevent overflow and keep things interesting.
Put It Away
According to the Law of Thermodynamics, everything tends to move to a higher level of disarray. The procedure from order to disorder will free energy, the other way around will require energy. That may explain why your curling iron is still plugged in on the top of your vanity. Unfortunately, however, it won’t keep you organized. No matter how much energy it expends, try to be mindful of where you put things and immediately put them away once you are done using them.
Keep It in the Room that You Use It In
If you use it in the living room, you might as well leave it in the living room. Otherwise, you’ll run the risk of never putting it away at all. If you don’t think you have the storage space to store the item in the same room in which you use it, you might want to think about reorganizing.
Deep Drawers Can Get You in Deep Trouble
If you’ve got a deep underwear drawer, chances are you’ve spent a lot of time tearing through it. Stop the tearing and start the wearing with shallow drawers. The smaller they are, the easier they are to organize and categorize.
Hanging Shoe Racks Are the Order of the Day
When the shoes are getting worn out before you get a chance to wear them, it may be a sign that you need a hanging shoe rack. Not only will help preserve your shoes, but it will reduce the chances of shoe separation.
Organize Items According to How Frequently You Use Them
When you’ve got shelves, eye level, and towards the center is prime real estate. Keep the items you use most often in easy to reach places. Alternatively, items that are used rarely should be kept on high shelves. It will make the things you use regularly easier to find and keep the items you use less often out of the way.
The Editing Process
The latest term in the decluttering lingo, editing refers to the step in the decluttering process that helps you decide what to toss, what to keep and what to donate. According to The Aesthetic Organizer, Wendy Silberstein, “Do not keep any garments that you haven’t worn in the 12 months, any expired bathroom or kitchen products or any inventory that has not served you well in the last 12 months.”
Focus 15 Method
Sort of like Konmari meets HIIT, the Focus 15 Method is a time-efficient method for home organization. Just set a timer for 15 minutes and focus on completing one task in that time frame. It gets the adrenaline going and puts the finish line in sight.
